I used to think it was cute and old-timey. Fun to tease him about, anyway. But, you're right; it's weird.

I always got that he had issues with OPSEC. He's a soldier, not a spy, he doesn't understand that sometimes you lie to people because it makes things better.

I expected him to be upset. I didn't expect him to accuse me of hating James so much that I intentionally tried to keep Steve from finding him.
